A brief Introduction..
Three weeks since have our doors have opened at Rebel Fitness Academy and the redefinition of physical culture has begun with an explosion in Tahoe California. In the era of high intensity jazzercise, muscle/movement confusion, and highly dangerous high quantity low quality cult like exercise competition garbage; a revolution has begun.
I would like to proclaim my reverence to Jesus, whom I serve, and have answered a biblical calling to serve my wife and others through the expression of removing physical limits, reclaiming can’t do and used to could activities, and instilling Hope in people swallowed up by body fat through high quality physical coaching.
Nearly 4 years ago I Entered the Kettlebell. It changed my life, and the way I approached exercise. As a fledgling coach what fitness and teaching was really meant to be became drastically redefined . “This” is so much more than some sweat and iron. I digress. Fast forward to now. Rebel Fitness Academy.
Our number one goal at the Academy is to improve movement and remove the roadblocks shackling people inside an impenetrable cage of misinformation, inappropriate training, danger, poor performance, body fat and discouragement.
As Gray Cook says, “first move well, …… then….move often”.
Have a gauge to objectify what is healthy and quality movement and what needs fixin.
Enter the FMS.
Then move often, using quality systems to continue to improve physical health, fundamental capability, and performance. Enter the Kettlebell. Then combine them.
Enter the CK-FMS and Rebel Fitness Academy.
Our clients get the treatment here. A full FMS evaluation 9-point body comp testing, and corrective exercise homework when they sign up. We also have a very firm discussion that they cannot come to certain classes (big bang for buck stuff until they work to consistently manage and “fix” their minimums). After a bit of an arm wrestle we provide them with safe group training options, to address, and work with their issues safely.
Fast-forward to our first week and people are walking in, cleaned up, and full of energy! I am marveled at how fast the nervous clicks into this stuff. Its almost as if it’s hungry for it, yearning for better mechanical movement, control and stability.
Classes were on fire and we didn’t have to beat our heads on the wall, creating progressions, cause everyone knows where they are at on the movement spectrum. So class is geared to enhance corrective homework and work with all green lights during the class! So everything is nice and safe (insert kittens here).
Enter the road-blocked client……
They’re doing the homework, they’re following the rules, and even some one-on-one sessions leave you stumped. As a quality professional you cannot just let them jump into classes of higher learning with issues that will put them in harms way, so what do you do?
First off, you must stay the course. Some patterns may be so ingrained it will take some time to break. Improvements might be measured in only inches, but better is better. These patterns did take years to get created, so breathe and trust. Perfect practice, not working out.
On the other hand, our bodies are pretty smart and if the nervous system likes what you’re doing then things will get better. 9.9 out of 10 right away, leaving you a 30-minute window to ingrain some new radness. Kettlebell radness. People (yes everyone) needs’ to know how to swing a kettlebell. A very well executed kettlebell swing is better than 99% of the exercises someone could choose to perform.
Yet, doing RNT exercises and every other corrective strategy just might not cut through the neural blocks. Granted they are highly important, but it’s just a not naturally driven movement response.
For instance someone with poor lower body action during squatting might very well benefit from some egg toss partner challenges. Now I am not suggesting you toss eggs around your facility, but I hope you get my point.
Enter the reactive self-limiting exercises. These exercises are KING. Human driven, human powered, biomechanically demanding, responsive neurological magic!!!
Lets discuss rules.
1.) Awareness/Control of neutral spine position and posture.
2.) Awareness/control of shoulder position. “No they are not earrings Ms. Johnson”
3.) The intensity/movement range of motion is limited by mechanical position during execution. (a camera will help clear up any confusion)
4.) The drill is terminated when control and/or power is lost.
That’s it. Here’s the Magic.
